Breakdancing to a Slow Sad Indie Song

I keep watching this video by Jordan Clark over and over. Maybe it’s that the simple melancholy feel of the song (“Irene” by Caribou) fits the rather sad and wistful mood I’m in right now. Or maybe I’m fascinated by the Cirque du Soleil-esque agility with which these guys are demonstrating their rather unusual human movement. Either way, this video is a beautiful example of how to mix and match two unlikely elements together with a surprising outcome. As the Listening Post notes, “with the right editing techniques, it’s possible to breakdance to anything, even low-tempo indie music”.

Speaking of human movement, here’s another one I found interesting. While the kid is not breakdancing per se, it’s pretty amazing what the human body is capable of.

Then again, if you get an early start like this little guy, you can train your body to do all sorts of crazy things. Here’s another badass b-boy video – this time set to more traditional breakdancing music. This guy is off the hook. Watch for the clip at 2:53 when he does push-ups with his feet off the ground…Nuts.

I dont know man they could have done a better job on that first video. I know guys who could kill that beat with full breakin. What they were mostly doing was flips. THeir footwork was horrible and their freezes were a lil generic. You dont even need to edit it if the person was good enough.

The 2nd video is an old one of David Elsewhere. He is pretty cool if not a lil wierd. I like they way he gets into his groove though.

Haha and the last is my man Junior. Did you know he is disabled?

Hey pointy, I agree with you on some level in terms of my break dancing skills, but there was actually some complications. I had some amazing break dancers supposed to show up for the shoot, however none of them showed up and the project was due that week. So me and my friend just took turns filming and trying our best at flipping or what have you. As well the lights had been rented so we had to use whatever we could find around in classrooms. So this turned into more of a practice video for when the break dancers actually do show up. But at the same time, this wasn’t supposed to be a break dance video, more using some break dancing to show unusual body movements.

@Pointy – All I know is that anyone who can do flips like that is pretty badass in my book. And ya, I read some things about Junior being disabled. You’d never know it based on the way he moves. Crazy.

@Jordan – Didn’t realize that your video was just some sort of class project. That makes it even more impressive. Where do you study? And for what class was this a project?

I’m just doing my foundation year at the Vancouver film school. It was for my experimentation class. We pretty much could do whatever project we wanted. I’m working on the next one right now. People have been asking me to make another one, so i thought i’d spend a lot more time and make one with much bigger and better moves from other people. Pretty excited about it.

You know what, after hearing that I completely reverse my previous statement. It was really crass of my to even make such a remark. Its an awesome attempt. I was assuming it was a pro video and was expecting a pro dancer (which says something about the quality of the production).

Your project is moving in the right direction and upon watching it again I would actually like to see more of it! Haha just tighten up the footwork and you would be pretty dope!

@Jordan- Please let us know when you finish your next project! I’ll do a follow up post on it for sure.
